SCULPTURES

Like several preceding series throughout the 90s, this series concerns itself with issues of presentation and context – the way surroundings are inflected by a presentation, and vice versa (the way a picture inflects its content). In this case abstract sculptures offer ambiguous cues or clues as to scale, colour, surface and volume. This is an interesting reversal on priorities for ‘truth to materials’ and self-evident mass and process in Modernist sculpture. Essentially the work draws no firm line between ‘stylised’ properties (of the picture) and realistic ones for its objects. This theme preoccupied me throughout the nineties and this series was my final statement before widening the scope of the relativism, with Cityicity.

There are 15 paintings, all acrylic on board, 2000, 18 X 15ins – 45.7 X 38.1cm
