TRAPPINGS

These are still lives treated as tiny landscapes or as studies of place. They include interiors and exteriors and feature a subtle segment of paraphernalia – not quite litter, not quite mementos. They are the provisional placings that persist as life’s half-sorted clutter.

The idea came from GARDEN PATH where I was at pains to resist the impulse to expansive panorama for once and to keep the landscapes modest, more focussed. By the end of that series the views were confined to not much more than garden beds and pot plants and I realised they were actually closer to still lives than landscapes which set me thinking about other kinds of nooks and niches that were a bit more than still lives, a bit less than landscapes.

Initially, I thought of the content as advertised products in less glamorous settings or after use. They were to be a kind of clash between Pop Art and Social Realism and I planned to confine objects to disposable wrapping and packaging that had not been fully disposed of, but rather just set to one side. Then, looking around I noticed there were little curios and souvenirs, items of clothing and things like medications that by circumstance come to occupy an unexpected place in people’s lives, if only temporarily. All of these placements recorded the niggling untidiness of life; life lived with the trappings of minor convenience. The figure emerged, almost in spite of my efforts to concentrate on inanimate objects, and I can only plead that with the dissolution of still live and landscape, the figure willy-nilly reasserts itself.

Lastly, the pictures obviously do more than just toy with boundaries of genres. They skew forms and norms, glimpse and guess as they trip the trappings of art.
